POTS Line Replacement

POTS line replacement is the migration of an analog copper telephone line to a managed cellular or IP connection using an on-site appliance that reproduces the analog interface, so the connected equipment continues to operate without being replaced.

Why this matters

It separates the transport problem from the endpoint problem. Copper has to go, but a certified fire alarm panel or a code-required elevator phone usually cannot. Replacing the line rather than the equipment is what keeps a migration affordable and keeps compliance intact.

What the appliance actually does

It reproduces the carrier’s behavior locally. The FXS port supplies loop current and dial tone, detects off-hook and dialed digits, and applies ring voltage — then carries the resulting session over cellular or wired IP. Because the analog interface exists on site rather than at a wire center, the equipment behind it needs no changes.

What to verify before choosing

Three things decide whether a replacement will work for a given line:

Signaling fidelity. Alarm panels and fax machines transmit data as in-band tones. A path that applies voice compression or introduces timing variation can carry perfectly intelligible speech and still corrupt an alarm transmission.

Backup power. Copper drew power from the central office, so a POTS phone worked in a blackout. A locally powered appliance has to re-create that deliberately, and for life-safety circuits the required duration is a code question.

Documented certification. For regulated endpoints, an installer or inspector will want evidence of third-party evaluation covering the exact model.

Sequencing a portfolio

Group by serving wire center rather than by site convenience, since retirement dates arrive that way. Within each group, migrate regulated endpoints first — they carry an approval step that ordinary lines do not.
