Scope

Communication path requirements
The code addresses the technologies permitted for transmitting alarm, supervisory, and trouble signals, and the performance expected of them. Replacing a copper path with a cellular one is a change to a code-governed element, not a like-for-like swap.
Supervision
Communication paths must be supervised so a failure is detected and annunciated rather than discovered when an alarm fails to transmit. Required intervals depend on the edition and the path technology.
Secondary power
The code addresses secondary power for the fire alarm system. Where a replacement appliance is now part of the transmission path, its power arrangements become part of that assessment.
The AHJ decides
The authority having jurisdiction determines what is acceptable in a given installation. Product certification supports that determination but does not substitute for it.
The distinction that matters: NFPA 72 governs the installed system, while UL 864 certifies a product. A device is certified to a product standard and used in systems governed by the code. Claiming a device is “NFPA 72 certified” conflates the two.
