Cellular POTS replacement

Cellular POTS replacement carries analog telephone lines over a mobile network, using an on-site appliance that presents FXS ports locally and transports the traffic over LTE or 5G.

How it works

The appliance terminates the analog equipment on FXS ports, then routes voice, fax, and alarm signaling over a cellular connection to the provider's network and on to the PSTN or a monitoring center. Dual SIMs and multiple carrier profiles allow failover if one network degrades, and an integrated battery keeps the appliance running through a power outage.

Why it matters

Cellular removes the dependency on the local wireline plant entirely, which is the point when that plant is being decommissioned. It also avoids waiting for fiber that may never be offered at a given site, and it makes each line independently monitorable.

A site does not migrate; each endpoint on it does. Sites fail acceptance because the verification was performed once, on a telephone, and generalized.

Build the test plan from the inventory, one row per endpoint, each with its own pass criterion. A fire or burglar panel passes when the supervising station confirms receipt of a test signal by account and zone. An elevator phone passes when someone at the answering point confirms two-way audio from inside the car. A fax line passes on a multi-page transmission to a real destination, checked for completeness rather than a send confirmation. A POS or ATM line passes on a completed transaction. A ring-down passes when lifting the handset reaches the intended far end unaided.

Dial tone at the port proves the port. It is the beginning of the test, not the end of it.

Record who tested what, when, and what the result was. That record is both the acceptance artifact and the baseline against which a future fault is diagnosed.

  • “Cellular is less reliable than copper for alarms.”

    Aging copper plant has become a significant source of alarm trouble conditions. A certified cellular path with battery backup and active supervision can be monitored continuously, whereas a degrading copper pair often fails silently.

  • “Cellular replacement needs good signal inside the equipment room.”

    Signal at the appliance matters, but antennas can be relocated and some platforms allow the radio module itself to be extended to a better location, so a weak equipment room is usually solvable.
