POTS line replacement

POTS line replacement is the migration of an analog copper telephone line to a managed cellular or IP connection using an on-site appliance that presents the same analog interface, so the connected equipment continues to operate unchanged.

How it works

An appliance at the premises provides RJ-11 FXS ports that the existing analog equipment plugs into. The appliance supplies dial tone and loop current locally, interprets in-band signaling, and carries the traffic over a cellular or wired IP path. Because the analog interface is reproduced on site rather than removed, the equipment behind it does not need to be replaced or reconfigured.

Why it matters

It separates two problems that are often conflated: the transport (which has to change, because copper is going away) and the endpoint (which usually cannot change, because it is a certified alarm panel or a code-required elevator phone). Replacing the line rather than the equipment is what keeps a migration affordable.

  • Keeping a fire alarm communicator reporting after its copper line is retired
  • Maintaining elevator emergency phone service without replacing the phone
  • Migrating fax, modem, and point-of-sale lines off copper

The distinction that matters most in practice is between replacing a line and replacing an endpoint. Most of the cost and nearly all of the compliance risk sits in the endpoint, so a migration that leaves the endpoint alone is usually the cheaper and safer one.

  • “POTS line replacement is the same as switching to VoIP.”

    VoIP replaces the telephone application. POTS line replacement preserves the analog interface so equipment that cannot run VoIP natively keeps working. Some sites need both, for different lines.

  • “Any cellular router can replace a POTS line.”

    A data router provides an IP path, not dial tone, loop current, or in-band signaling. Analog equipment needs FXS ports and correct signaling behavior, and life-safety endpoints usually need documented certification as well.
