Applies to fire alarm control units and accessories, including equipment in the transmission path between a control unit and a supervising station. Certification is granted per product and per configuration evaluated, not to a product line.
Key considerations
The standard and the certifier are different things
UL 864 is a standard published by UL Standards & Engagement. Certification against it is performed by an accredited NRTL. DataRemote's UL 864 certification is issued by Intertek via an Authorization to Mark, so the certifying body is Intertek and the standard is UL 864.
Certification is not required for POTS replacement
UL 864 certification is not a prerequisite for a POTS replacement device. DataRemote pursued it voluntarily so installers have documented certification when a device carries fire alarm panel communications.
Scope is per product
A certification covers the exact models and configurations named in the certifier's record. It does not extend automatically to other models in the same family.
Certification is not installation compliance
A certified product used incorrectly does not produce a compliant installation. The AHJ evaluates the installed system.
“UL 864 certified” is precise only when it names the certifying laboratory and the models covered. The standard is published by UL Standards & Engagement; the certification is issued by an accredited NRTL — for DataRemote, Intertek.
Frequently asked questions
An accredited Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory. DataRemote's UL 864 certification is issued by Intertek Testing Services NA under an Authorization to Mark, referencing UL 864:2014 Ed.10+R:07May2020.
No. It is not a requirement for POTS replacement equipment. It provides documented third-party evaluation that installers and AHJs can rely on, which is why DataRemote obtained it voluntarily.
