Definition
What is internet backup with cellular failover?
Internet backup with cellular failover is a standby 5G/LTE connection delivered by an on-site appliance. It takes over automatically when a site's primary internet circuit fails. The DataRemote appliance continuously monitors the primary connection — fiber, cable, or DSL — for packet loss, latency spikes, or complete link failure. When it detects a problem, it switches traffic to the cellular path within seconds. No manual steps are needed, so voice, point-of-sale, and other critical traffic stay online. When the primary circuit recovers, the appliance fails back on its own. That keeps traffic optimized and cellular data costs controlled. The appliance also carries integrated battery backup — up to 48 hours, depending on model and load. That means failover keeps working through power outages as well as circuit outages. Wired circuits are changing too: legacy copper services are retiring under the FCC's technology transitions framework. That makes an independent backup path more valuable, not less.
The Cost of Downtime
What does internet downtime cost?
Internet outages aren't just inconveniences. They stop transactions, disable security systems, disconnect remote workers, and put compliance at risk. Industry estimates put the average cost of downtime at roughly $5,600 per minute. Most businesses suffer several outages a year. Detection and repair commonly take hours when they depend on someone noticing the problem and opening a carrier ticket. While a site is offline, payment processing and point-of-sale halt. VoIP phones go dark. Security cameras and alarm monitoring lose connectivity, and cloud-based tools become unreachable. Automatic cellular failover exists to shrink that window from hours to seconds. The appliance detects the failure itself, switches traffic to 5G/LTE with no manual steps, and fails back when the primary circuit recovers. DataRemote keeps your sites online automatically — and the Ara platform records every failover event, so you know an outage happened even though nothing stopped working.
Why your business cannot afford downtime
- Payment processing, POS systems, and e-commerce halt completely
- VoIP phone systems and business communications go dark
- Security cameras and alarm monitoring lose connectivity
- Cloud-based tools, CRMs, and ERPs become inaccessible
- Remote employees and branch offices are cut off entirely

How It Works
Automatic failover in four steps
Primary connection monitors continuously
The DataRemote appliance watches your primary internet connection — fiber, cable, or DSL — around the clock for packet loss, latency spikes, or a dead link.
Outage detected within seconds
The appliance reacts the moment it detects a problem — even a partial slowdown that affects quality. Failover triggers automatically within seconds.
Cellular backup activates automatically
The 4G LTE or 5G cellular backup link turns on by itself. Internet service is restored with no manual steps.
Primary restored, failback is seamless
When the primary connection recovers, the appliance automatically switches back — keeping traffic optimized and costs controlled.

Compliance note: DataRemote equipment is designed to support code-governed applications; it does not by itself guarantee code compliance. Final acceptance of any installation may depend on the product model, endpoint compatibility, installation, configuration, carrier, monitoring provider, the code edition in force, the jurisdiction, and the authority having jurisdiction. Certification and listing records are model-specific; see each product page and the issuing organization's own records.
