The death of dial tone

The telecommunications industry has changed with the times, and the way service is provisioned has changed with it. That evolution has led to the death of dial tone as we knew it. To keep existing capability, many users of traditional dial-tone services have been pushed toward potentially expensive equipment changes.

Where it all started

It began in 1876, when Alexander Graham Bell received a U.S. patent for the telephone. Bell formed the Bell Company, which became the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T). Competitors followed, and Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) companies proliferated.

Their technology carried voice in an analog format, and analog telecommunications would reign for a century. These simple lines were called Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) lines. Moving toward the future

Fast-forward 100 years and large-scale wireless communications arrived. By the millennium, cellular was faster, more reliable, and more ubiquitous — and users began moving their PSTN connectivity to wireless. That shift strained the cost model of the regulated LECs, already pressured by competition from cable. Consumers saw POTS rate increases.

The cable industry discovered that transmitting digital signals unlocked additional capacity, dovetailing with the rise of the Wide Area Network (WAN) — the Internet. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) went mainstream, opening yet another path to replace traditional POTS lines. No longer tethered to telephone wire, anyone could communicate wirelessly or over IP. These forces together produced the “death of dial tone.”

AT&T, Verizon, and other LECs petitioned the FCC, state regulators, and legislatures for permission to retire wired PSTN connections in favor of wireless and VoIP.
