Central station

A central station is a continuously staffed facility that receives signals from alarm systems, verifies them, and initiates the appropriate response — dispatching responders, notifying the owner, or logging the event — under the operating requirements of UL 827.
How it works
Alarm panels at protected premises transmit event signals over a communication path — historically a POTS line, today commonly cellular or IP — to receivers at the central station. Operators triage each signal against the account's instructions: dispatch the fire department, call a keyholder, or record a supervisory condition. UL 827 sets requirements for the building, staffing, redundancy, and record-keeping of the station itself.
Why it matters
The communication path between a panel and its central station is the part of the chain that copper retirement breaks. When the POTS line goes away, the replacement path must still deliver the panel's signals in the format and within the supervision windows the station expects — otherwise events go unreported and the account falls out of compliance.

The station’s receivers do not care what physical network carried a signal, but the code and the station’s listing do — which is why a POTS replacement serving alarm panels is evaluated on its transmission characteristics, not just on whether a call goes through.
Coordinating a cutover with the station
The station is a participant in the migration, not a bystander, and involving them late is a common and avoidable source of failed acceptance.
Contact them before the work is scheduled and establish four things. Which account numbers are affected, so signals arriving on the new path are recognized rather than discarded. Which signal formats their receivers decode, checked against what each panel is actually configured to transmit. The supervision interval they expect, checked against what the new path sustains. A test window, placed on their schedule so test signals are not treated as real events.
Ask for written confirmation of the signals received during testing, listing account, zone, signal type and timestamp. Stations issue these routinely on request.
Also confirm how they want to be notified of planned outages afterward. A site that migrates cleanly and then triggers repeated unannounced trouble conditions during maintenance consumes goodwill that is useful to have.

NFPA 72 uses supervising station as the umbrella term. A central station is one specific kind — a listed facility providing central station service — alongside remote and proprietary supervising stations, each with different requirements.
