Alarm panel supervision

Supervision is the automatic, periodic monitoring of an alarm system's communication path so that a failure is detected and annunciated rather than discovered only when an alarm fails to transmit.
How it works
The panel and the monitoring center exchange test signals on a defined interval. If the expected signal does not arrive within its window, the system reports a trouble condition. Applicable code establishes how often supervision must occur and how quickly a failure must be annunciated, and those intervals depend on the communication technology in use.
Why it matters
Supervision is what converts a silent failure into a known one. In a migration it also becomes a compliance question: the replacement path has to support supervision at the interval the code and the authority having jurisdiction require, and the timing for a cellular path is not necessarily the same as for copper.

“Supervision is a feature of the monitoring service, not the panel.”
It is a property of the whole path — panel, transmission technology, and monitoring center together. Changing the transmission technology can change supervision behavior even if panel and monitoring service are unchanged.
