Ring-down line

Also known as: ringdown, automatic ringdown, ARD, hotline circuit, private line automatic ringdown, PLAR

A ring-down line is a circuit that connects to one predetermined far end automatically: lift the handset (or press the call button) and the other end rings immediately, with no dial tone and no number to dial.

How it works

In the classic private-line form, the circuit permanently links two points, and going off-hook at one end applies ringing at the other. The same behavior is commonly emulated in switched networks as a hotline: the line is configured to auto-dial a fixed destination the instant it goes off-hook. Either way, the person picking up never dials.

Why it matters

Ring-down behavior is exactly what elevator emergency phones, entry call boxes, and emergency hotlines depend on — the caller may be trapped, panicked, or unable to dial. A POTS replacement serving these endpoints must preserve the auto-connect behavior, not merely provide dial tone.

When inventorying copper lines for retirement, ring-downs deserve their own line item: they look like ordinary analog lines on a bill, but they carry behavior an ordinary dial-tone replacement will silently break.

Identifying and testing a ring-down

Ring-downs are easy to miss on an inventory and easy to get wrong at cutover, because their defining behavior is something no ordinary line does: connecting to a fixed far end with no dialing.

Identify them physically. Lift the handset and listen. An ordinary line presents dial tone; a ring-down begins ringing the far end immediately. That single test distinguishes them faster than any record does, and the equipment is often unmistakable — an elevator car phone, a poolside emergency phone, a bank teller-to-vault handset, a gate intercom.

Test them by completing the call. Someone must be at the intended far end to confirm the connection arrived, that audio works in both directions, and that it reached the correct destination — a ring-down pointed at the wrong number rings perfectly well.

Note during inventory what the far end is supposed to be, because after migration that destination is configuration rather than wiring, and configuration is easy to transcribe incorrectly. Where the far end is a monitoring point, coordinate the test with whoever staffs it.

Common misconceptions

  • “A ring-down line is just a phone with a speed-dial button.”

    Speed dial still requires the user to act and the line to present dial tone first. A ring-down circuit connects by the act of going off-hook itself — no user dialing step exists to get wrong.
