Fixed wireless access

Fixed wireless access (FWA) uses a mobile network as a fixed location's primary internet connection, in place of a wired circuit.

How it works

A stationary router with a cellular radio and often an external antenna connects to a nearby cell site and serves the premises like a wired circuit would, providing routing, NAT, and local networking behind it.

Why it matters

FWA can be provisioned in days rather than the weeks or months a wired install takes, which makes it viable both as a primary connection where wireline options are poor and as a bridge while a wired circuit is being delivered.

  • Sites where wired broadband is unavailable or uneconomic
  • Temporary and rapidly deployed locations
  • Bridging connectivity while a wired circuit is provisioned

The practical appeal is lead time. A wireless circuit can be live in days, which is often the deciding factor rather than raw throughput.

  • “Fixed wireless access and internet failover are the same thing.”

    FWA is the primary connection; failover is a backup that activates when a primary fails. The same hardware can often do either, but they are different roles.
