Cellular failover

Also known as: 4G/5G failover, wireless failover, LTE backup

Cellular failover is the automatic switch of a site's traffic — internet, voice, or alarm signaling — from its primary connection to a cellular network when the primary fails, and back again when it recovers.

How it works

A gateway or appliance continuously monitors the primary path (fiber, cable, DSL) for loss of link, packet loss, or latency beyond thresholds. When the checks fail, it brings traffic up over its cellular WAN — typically within seconds in supported configurations — and reverses the switch once the primary is stable again. Failover quality depends on what is monitored, how sessions are handled during the switch, and the cellular coverage actually available at the site.

Why it matters

Outages hit exactly when connectivity matters — storms, cable cuts, power events. Failover behavior is configuration- and coverage-dependent: the monitoring thresholds, the carrier's signal at the site, and which services are prioritized during the switch all determine what users actually experience.

The honest spec sheet for any failover deployment is three questions: what triggers the switch, how long does it take, and what happens to the sessions that were in flight?

Verifying failover before you depend on it

Failover is the feature most often assumed and least often tested. Verify it deliberately, and verify it at the site rather than on a bench.

Induce the failure the way it will actually happen: unplug the primary circuit at the demarcation point, not at the device. Then measure four things. Detection time — how long before the switch begins. Switch time — how long until traffic flows again. Session survival — which connections dropped and which held; voice and alarm sessions frequently behave differently. Failback — what happens when the primary returns, including whether it returns automatically and whether that transition drops anything.

Record the numbers, because they are what set expectations with the people who depend on the site. “It fails over” is not a specification; “detection within a defined interval, sessions re-establish, failback is automatic” is.

Then re-test after any firmware or carrier configuration change. Failover paths degrade quietly, and the first real outage is an expensive time to discover it.

Common misconceptions

  • “Failover means no outage is ever noticeable.”

    The switch takes finite time, long-lived sessions may need to reconnect, and cellular bandwidth may differ from the primary. Well-configured failover minimizes disruption; it does not repeal it — and it depends on adequate cellular coverage at the site.
