## Why this matters

These lines are the easiest to miss and among the most disruptive to lose. Nobody makes calls on them, so they rarely appear in a telephony inventory, but a store that cannot authorise a card payment or a utility that stops receiving meter reads has a direct operational and revenue problem.

## Where things stand

Much of this equipment is embedded, long-lived, or certified in place, so replacing it outright is often uneconomic. Presenting an FXS port locally and moving only the transport keeps the equipment in service, which is why line replacement generally beats equipment replacement for this category.

## The visibility problem

A failed voice line generates a phone call within minutes. A failed meter line generates an

## Why fax is the useful test case

Fax negotiates speed and error correction with in-band tones before sending page data as
modulated audio. It fails on paths that carry speech perfectly well. If fax completes
reliably end to end, the path is handling timing and signaling properly — which is good
evidence for the other analog equipment sharing it.

## Testing that actually proves something

Dial tone proves the port is alive. It says nothing about whether the function works. The
tests worth running are the real ones: send a fax to a real destination and confirm receipt,
run a card transaction to authorisation, confirm a meter read arrived at the head-end.

**Can we keep our existing fax machines?**

Usually yes. An appliance presenting an FXS port lets the machine operate as before while the transport moves to cellular. Fax needs specific support and specific testing, because it is unusually sensitive to timing and compression.
