# Supervising station

## How it works

NFPA 72 Chapter 26 defines three flavors: a central station (a listed third-party facility providing contracted central station service), a proprietary supervising station (run by the property owner for its own facilities), and a remote supervising station (typically a fire department or other approved location). The same chapter also governs the transmission technologies allowed to carry signals to the station and how quickly a lost path must be detected and reported.

Which kind of supervising station serves a building changes who must be notified, how the account is documented, and what the authority having jurisdiction will accept. The transmission-path rules attached to supervising stations are what a POTS replacement carrying alarm signals is measured against.

## What travels with the account when the path changes

Moving alarm transmission off copper does not move it out of NFPA 72's supervision
requirements. The obligations attach to the alarm system and its account, not to the transport,
which means a migration inherits every requirement the copper arrangement carried.

Four things to reconcile with the station before cutover. **Supervision interval** — the code
requirement, the station's configured expectation, and what the new path sustains all have to
agree. **Signal formats** — the station's receivers must decode what each panel actually
transmits. **Account and zone mapping** — unchanged, or signals arrive and are discarded.
**Trouble handling** — how the station is notified of a path failure and what they do with it.

Ask for written confirmation of test signals received, with account, zone, signal type and
timestamp. Stations produce these on request, and it is the document an inspector will want.

Also establish how planned maintenance is announced afterward, so routine work does not generate
unexplained trouble conditions on a monitored account.

## Common misconceptions

**Claim:** Any monitoring center is a central station.

**Correction:** Only a listed facility providing central station service per NFPA 72 and UL 827 is a central station. The umbrella term for all three arrangements is supervising station.
