# Fax over cellular

> Fax over cellular is the transport of analog fax transmissions over a mobile network, using an appliance that presents an FXS port to the fax machine and handles the timing and signaling fax requires.

- Also known as: cellular fax, analog fax over LTE

## How it works

Two fax machines negotiate speed and error correction with in-band tones before sending page data as modulated audio. Carrying that over a packet network requires either a fax-aware relay or a path that preserves timing and avoids lossy compression. Getting either wrong causes negotiation failures, dropped pages, or garbled output.

## Why it matters

Fax survives in healthcare, legal, financial, and government workflows for regulatory and interoperability reasons, so 'just email it instead' is often not available. Because fax is far less tolerant of packet loss and compression than speech, it is one of the most reliable tests of whether a replacement path is genuinely signaling-aware.

## Common use cases

- Healthcare providers exchanging records with partners who require fax
- Legal and government submissions where fax remains the accepted channel

Fax is the canary. If fax completes reliably over a path, the path is handling timing and
signaling properly; if it does not, other analog equipment is probably at risk too.

## Common misconceptions

**Claim:** Fax works automatically if voice calls work.

**Correction:** Voice tolerates loss and compression that breaks fax negotiation. Fax needs to be specifically supported and specifically tested.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does fax fail on some cellular replacements?**

Usually voice compression or timing variation that corrupts the modem handshake. Appliances intended for fax handle the transport explicitly rather than treating it as ordinary voice.

**Should I test fax after migration?**

Yes, end to end against a real destination. Dial tone and a successful voice call do not demonstrate that fax will complete.
