# Cellular gateway

> A cellular gateway is an on-site device that connects local equipment to a cellular network as its wide-area link — routing Ethernet traffic, and in POTS-replacement designs also presenting analog FXS ports so phones, faxes, and panels ride the same cellular connection.

## How it works

The gateway holds one or more SIMs, attaches to the carrier's network, and presents local interfaces on the premises side: Ethernet LAN ports, Wi-Fi on some models, and — on POTS-replacement appliances — RJ-11 FXS ports that generate dial tone, loop current, and ring voltage locally. Enterprise-grade units add battery backup, remote management, and failover logic; consumer hotspots share the radio technology but not the supervision, telephony, or manageability.

## Why it matters

The gateway is the single box a site's connectivity resilience concentrates into, so its class matters: battery runtime, carrier approvals, management platform, and analog behavior are the differences between a hotspot and infrastructure. For copper retirement specifically, only gateways with true FXS telephony can replace what the POTS line did.

"Gateway" is the honest word for these devices: the interesting engineering is on the
premises side — what the box presents to your equipment — not in the radio.

## What to evaluate on the premises side

Because the interesting engineering faces the equipment rather than the network, evaluation
should start there too.

Ask what the device **presents** to the local equipment: how many analog ports, what Ethernet
configuration, whether it can pass a static address through or expects to hand out its own.
Ask what it **supplies**: loop current, ring voltage, disconnect supervision, and how much
power is available to attached loads. Ask how it **fails**: what happens to the local ports
when the cellular link drops, whether that failure is reported, and to whom.

Then ask the operational questions, which are the ones that dominate cost after year one.
How is it provisioned — one at a time, or in bulk? Can firmware be updated remotely? Does it
report line status, or only reachability? Who holds the SIM relationship?

Radio specifications matter, but they are rarely the constraint. A gateway with excellent
throughput and the wrong port configuration is unusable for an analog migration.

## Common misconceptions

**Claim:** Any cellular router can replace a POTS line.

**Correction:** Replacing a POTS line requires analog FXS ports with correct dial tone, loop current, DTMF, and disconnect behavior — plus battery backup and, for life-safety lines, appropriate certifications. A data-only router provides none of that.
